Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Musa Yusuf Garba, psc(+), IIPS, PSPS, is a distinguished law enforcement officer of exceptional professionalism, integrity, and strategic leadership. Born on the 1st of January, 1966, into the respected family of Alhaji Garba Maigoro in Gusau Local Government Area of Zamfara State, his life has been marked by discipline, service, and an unwavering commitment to national security.
He began his educational journey at Township Primary School and Nizzamiya Islamiyah Primary School in Gusau, before proceeding to Government Secondary School, Bungudu. His academic pursuit culminated in a Bachelor of Arts degree in Islamic Education from Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto. Driven by a passion for knowledge and excellence, he further obtained two Master’s degrees one in Criminology and Forensic Psychology, and another in Philosophy from the Nigerian Defence Academy, Kaduna.
AIG Musa Yusuf Garba commenced his illustrious career in the Nigeria Police Force on the 18th of May, 1992, as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police. Over the years, he has built a remarkable career spanning more than three decades, distinguished by dedication, operational excellence, and impactful leadership across various commands and formations nationwide.
His early assignments saw him serve as ASP Crime in Lafia Division, Divisional Traffic Officer in Shendam, and Divisional Crime Officer in Gembu. He later rose to become Commander of 40 Police Mobile Force, Jalingo, and served meritoriously as Aide-de-Camp to the Governor of Zamfara State. His expertise in investigations and operations was further demonstrated in his roles within the Criminal Investigation Departments in Zamfara and Kaduna States.
Between 2004 and 2007, he served as a Directing Staff at the Police College Kaduna, where he contributed immensely to the training and mentoring of younger officers. He subsequently held several Divisional Police Officer (DPO) positions in key locations, including Anguwar Rogo, Magajin Gari, Mpape, and Kurmin Mashi, where he was widely recognized for effective policing and community engagement.
A seasoned professional in community policing, AIG Garba served as Coordinator of Community Policing in Katsina, FCT, and Kaduna States, following specialized training in Houston, USA. His leadership footprint further expanded through strategic roles such as Commander of 41 PMF in Damaturu, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Operations) in Kebbi State, and Area Commander in Bori, Rivers State.
His exceptional competence earned him higher responsibilities at the Force Headquarters, Abuja, as Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Armament, and subsequently as Commandant of Police College Ikeja. He also served as Acting Commandant of the Police Staff College, Jos, and Commissioner of Police, Kaduna State Command, where he recorded significant achievements in crime control and public safety.
Until his elevation to the rank of Assistant Inspector-General of Police, FCID Annex Kaduna, he served as AIG Maritime Police Command, further demonstrating his versatility and capacity across specialized policing domains.
AIG Musa Yusuf Garba has attended numerous professional courses both locally and internationally, covering areas such as Security Management and Strategic Operations, Enterprise Risk Management, Hostage Survival, Expatriate Protection, and specialized security in Oil & Gas, Maritime, and Aviation sectors. He also holds an Executive Diploma in Private Detective Tradecraft from Elizade University, Ondo State, and is a certified Private Investigator by the International Security Organization, Switzerland.
A Fellow of the International Institute of Professional Security (IIPS), the Institute of Criminological Studies and Security Management, and the Institute of Strategic and Public Negotiation, AIG Garba stands as a symbol of intellectual depth and professional excellence.
